Science Demonstrations

Science demonstrations are offered throughout the day to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. Public demonstration times are posted each day at the entrance of How Things Fly (gallery 109).

Science demonstrations may also be reserved in advance for school groups. Please note that adequate space cannot be guaranteed for school groups during public demonstrations, so reservations are recommended.

Forces Of Flight

Grades: 4–12
Description: Students learn about the basic scientific principles of air- and spaceflight by seeing what makes a balloon buoyant, testing their own strength against the air pressure in the gallery, exploring Bernoulli’s principle, and much more. A teaching poster for the interactive exhibition How Things Fly will be sent free of charge with your confirmation. (limit 50 participants)

Paper Airplane Contest

Grades: 4-8
Description: Explore the concept of “stability” with this fun, hands-on activity. Students use paper clips to balance their airplanes and compete against their classmates for a prize. No experience necessary! All materials provided. (limit 30 participants)
